On our way our of Thimphu we stopped at the Great Buddha Dordenma, which is one of the world’s largest buddhas. It’s approximately 18 stories tall! Construction began in 2006 and finished nine years later in 2015 and it’s made of gold-plated bronze. It was constructed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 4th King of Bhutan.
There is a large plaza in front of the great buddha that overlooks the Thimphu valley.
So you can easily see why they picked this location to place the Great Buddha.
Surrounding the plaza are 18 foot tall statues of other buddhas and all are made of gold-plated bronze as well.

Inside the temple houses another 100,000 buddha statues that are a mix of 8” and 12” tall. 100,000! Unfortunately because it was a holiday, and everyone was at the Thimphu Tsechu, the temple was closed to visitors so we were unable to go inside.
