In the Shinjuku neighborhood of Tokyo, in the shadow of the gigantic Shinjuku Railway Station you will find a collection of 80 year old alleys that are collectively known as “Memory Lane”. That’s the nice name, as they are more commonly known as “Piss Alley”.
Piss Alley earned this name because the drinking establishments along the alleys were so small that they didn’t have restrooms. So customers would wander off when nature called.
Today it’s much more civilized but you still squeeze in for drinks and delicious yakitori.
We found a place that had three open stools and settled in. Before we knew it we were making friends with the regulars at this particular establishment. Meet Goto-san and his drinking buddies.
They were drinking Yuzu Chuhai’s (yummmmmmmm) and we were drinking beer.
After a couple of hours of chowing on chicken skewers and yukking it up with Goto-san, we returned to our suite at the Park Hyatt.
A fun evening overall and just $70 all in for three. Tokyo can be inexpensive if you know where to go!
