Tokyo is the world’s greatest food city. I know, I know, you’re thinking that’s impossible, everyone knows that Paris is the world’s greatest food city.
But consider this: there are 234 restaurants in Tokyo with Michelin stars. Paris has just 92. The diversity of choice in Tokyo is staggering and it’s the only place we’ve been where we get anxious about how many meals we’ll have and what they will be.
At the top of our list was a revisit to the Tsukiji Fish Market for a sushi lunch at one of the restaurants in the outer market. Tsukiji is the epicenter of the epicenter of sushi and this weekend was the last weekend the market was to be open before its move to a new location.
What we didn’t think about was how many other people had the same idea. Waits in a drizzly rain were running four hours for a seat. Ugh, totally not happening. And so we wound up here:
Totally fun, but definitely not Tsukiji. We’ll have to try again at the new location.
Other places we got to included Birdland in the Ginza, a beak-to-tail chicken restaurant that uses bunchan to grill and is amazing. Also right down the hall from the famous Jiro.
We also had a proper tempura meal at Tsunahachi Tsunohazuan. Not only is it a mouthful to say, it was a mouthful to eat.
But look at one of incredible things they did with tempura.
We had a lovely dinner here.
Our hostess for the evening.
If you haven’t been to Tokyo and are afraid to go because of the food, don’t worry about it. You’ll find plenty to eat and definitely won’t starve.
