We left Zermatt in the morning by train and arrived in Zurich early afternoon. Drizzly and cloudy but nothing too difficult. Still amazed at how warm it was for the whole trip – really got by with a hoodie or light jacket except in Zermatt.
We spent the afternoon walking around Zurich’s old town. Zurich actually was founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago so there is some history here.
The Grossmünster is perhaps the most famous chirch in Zurich. Legend has it that the church was founded by Charlemagne, whose horse fell to its knees over the tombs of Zurich’s patron saints Felix and Regula.
The Grossmünster is a Protestant church, which explains the spareness inside. We were fortunate that a string combo was practicing for a New Year’s concert inside. Lovely.
The rest of old town, called Niederdorf, was as charming as you’d imagine.
Lots of restaurants and shops along the way.
The next morning, New Year’s Eve, we awoke to beautiful blue skies and warm temperatures. Nice enough that we walked along the lakefront.
For a town obsessed with money and managing money, it seemed very relaxed as people jogged and walked along the lake.
At sunset we were rewarded with a beautiful send off to 2022.
What a gorgeous trip to the Alps. A bit disappointing that it wasn’t colder and snowier for holiday ambience, but it did make it easier to get around.
So glad you could join us – we have a lot more planned for 2023 so stay tuned!
