Our flight from Chicago was a bit late due to the storm earlier this week, so we didn’t arrive at our hotel until about 2:30 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Maybe because it’s been so cold in the U.S., it has been very warm in Europe. Munich is in the mid-50s with no sign of snow.
On one side of our hotel is the Fräuenkirche that has the notable rounded domes.
The Fräuenkirche serves as the main cathedral in Municb and was built in 1524.
Immediately around the corner is the Marienplatz, the main square in Munich: Along one side of the square is the Räthaus or City Hall. In the basement is the Rätskeller, or City Cellar, a famous local restaurant.
The most famous landmark is the new city hall and the Glockenspiel. That is a cute little arrangement of dancing characters that go into action at 11:00, 12:00 and in the summer also 5;00.
The show lasts just about 10 minutes and draws a healthy crowd to the Marienplatz.
As the sun set we walk around the Altstadt and then made our way to the wonderful Hofbräuhaus for a pretzel and beer.
The Hofbräuhaus is as close to an emporium as you’ll get. Seating is open and there is usually an oom-pah-pah band.
Ladies with baskets of giant pretzels roam around and you’re able to grab on for €5.30. They are worth every pfennig!
After our visit we headed back to the hotel. The Marienplatz we transitioning to evening wear and looked great doing it.
In front of the Rätskeller is a giant, living tree that is decorate with lights. Very festive!
Munich is all dressed for the holidays. Now all we need is snow!
