Mirissa is a beach town located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka and is known for surfing and all manner of waterborne activities including whale and dolphin watching. It was to be our next stop on our trip.
First we had to come down out of the mountains from Ella. The road down is steep and winding but presents some beautiful scenery.
And some terrific surprises such as this waterfall.
We also saw monkees along the way but couldn’t get the camera going fast enough to snap a picture.
We did manage to snap a pic of a wild peacock crossing the road.
And then later, at the edge of Udawalawe National Park we saw a couple of wild elephants!
We had wanted to take a safari through the park but they leave at 06:00 which would have meant leaving Ella at 03:00 which just wasn’t going to happen.
So instead we compromised and stopped at the Elephant Transit Home. Sadly poaching still happens and this leaves orphans that the Transit Home raises and hopes to release back into the wild.
Unfortunately it felt a little zoo-like so we didn’t stay long although the baby elephants were super cute.
Soon enough we reached the coast near Mirissa where we saw the fishing boats that bring the bounty of the sea to Sri Lanka.
Naturally the temperature had ratcheted up during our descent from Ella and we were in full-on beach weather. Not so bad if you have a nice pool or beach. See the next post for what happens next.
