We awoke the next morning to the sunrise in Saigon which we enjoyed from our living room. It was cool enough to open the shutters and windows and listen to Saigon wake up.
Our plan today was to start with a market. There are two big ones in Saigon and we chose Ben Thanh Market. We hopped into a taxi and 15 minutes and $1.32 later we were there (yes, taxis are nearly free in Saigon). The lunch hour was in full swing when got there.
Unfortunately much of the market was overrun with cheap Chinese trinkets, a scourge we haven’t been able to escape, not even at Target. So we walked through the wet market and saw a few interesting things.
Starting with crabs!
The famous durian, which are usually banned from public spaces in Asia because of their pungent smell.
And my favorite fruit, pomelos.
One last little surprise: a local liquor that is steeped with snake and scorpion. We didn’t try it. Hah.
Always nice to visit a market.
