We love going to markets whenever we travel because it’s at the markets where you can really see the soul of the place. What sort of foods are people eating? How are they buying them? What’s popular?
So today after lunch we stopped in at the Fish Souk and then the Fruit & Vegetable Souk down the road.
At the Fish Souk, which was sizeable for where we are, we saw dozens of kinds of fish that we had never head of before. A few were familiar, but have you ever seen of a beltfish?
Looks just like a belt! Crazy, right?
We also saw a couple of fish more familiar, like red snapper.
At this fish market you’re able to buy your selection from the fishmonger, walk it over to the area where there are dozens of guys cleaning fish, and then take your cleaned fish over to one of the places that will cook it for you.
Once you have your lunch you can even buy something to read while you eat. One stop shop!
After we walked through the Fish Market, we went down the road to the Fruit & Vegetable market.
Nothing too out of the ordinary but we did see a lot of varieties and size of eggplants. Some even shaped like eggs!
We did see kilos and kilos of parsley, which is a favorite ingredient in Arabic dishes and looked beautiful.
Pumpkins were also quite popular as they are used as an ingredient in many dishes.
The produce looked terrrific in general, big selection and good quality and the sellers were eager to show you what they had.
Their fruits and vegetables come from all over the middle east and south Asia including Pakistan, Iran, and India.

Beautiful!
I would have liked the fruit and veggie market
The belt fish is really interesting! I wonder if sponge bob wears one to keep his pants up.
