Dubai is fairly insane in the same way that Las Vegas is fairly insane. If you’re into it (or drunk!) it can be a blast. But otherwise it’s just a gaudy desert town with a lot of malls. And that’s ultimately what Dubai comes out to be.
At the base of the Burj Khalifa they have built a lagoon on top of the Dubai Mall in which tour boats paddle around during a nightly light show. We didn’t stay after dark but you can see the light nanks in the lagoon below.
I’m sure you’ve heard that they’ve even managed to create a fake ski slope inside a mall in Dubai. Naturally we had to take a look at that so on our way out of town we stopped at the Mall of Emirates to take a look. We couldn’t really see the ski slope from the outside, but you could see the tobaggan run and people all dressed up in the ski wear like they were in Aspen. Funny.
Ultimately you have to go to Dubai at least once if you’re in the area, just because it’s a place to see. But it’s really not anyplace we’d probably go back to unless we’re connecting again on another trip.
