A shockingly good museum, if you haven’t been. We practically had to wear rollerskates as we ran through it, but ultimately we only have 3 1/2 days in London so we had to pick and choose what we saw because we simply didn’t have the time.
Here is a view from over the entrance gallery:
This is the gallery of reproductions that the British created because not everyone could go to ancient lands and see these things in person. So they would create the reproduction and install it in a museum in London. Funny thing is, some of the originals have been destroyed and thus the reproductions are the only records we have left of those treasures.
To give you an idea of the scale, examine the picture and you will see people walking around or sitting down in front of a sarcophagus. The columns are immense.
They had a lot of really interesting photographs and dagguerotypes from as early as 1820 in the photography gallery. But our favorite was of the Whirling Dervishes from 1880.
It is ironic that we saw the Dervishes in person in Istanbul but weren’t allowed to photograph them. So this picture from 135 years ago will have to do.
Here is a view of the jewels gallery. Stunning.
My favorite headband.
