After squeezing all we could from Copenhagen, we headed to our next stop in Stockholm – capital of the Swedish realm.
The train to Stockholm is around 5 hours which is only slightly more than flying, so train it was. Tbis way we also got to experience the famous Øresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo, Sweden.
Completed in 2000 at a cost of €2.6 billion, the Øresund finally connected Sweden to mainland Europe via train. Altogether it is about 7.5 miles long.
So just 5 short hours later we stepped off our train in Stockholm and took a cab to our hotel where we were greeted by this view from our room.
Not ones to waste a minute, we were off to explore Gamla Stan, the Old Town that surrounds our hotel.
After a few minutes we found ourselves in the middle of the original town square, called Stortorget.
Evidence of occuption in and around the square goes back to 1024 and the square was central to Stockholm for hundreds of years. It was the site of the gruesome Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520, which we’ll let you read about on your own.
Near the square is the Stockholm Cathedral which is the first church in Stockholm. Called Storkyrkan, it was completed in 1306.
Storkyrkan was the site of many coronations over the centuries.
It is also the site of most of the important state funerals and weddings.
From Storkyrkan we made our way into the Nobel Prize Museum which is also on the square.
Not as extensive as you want it to be but still somewhat interesting.
A replica of Marie Curie’s notebook can be found here. The original is still radioactive and so can not be displayed.
Madame Curie died from blood poisoning likely due to her radiation experiments.
Throughout the museum they had some artifacts from prior Nobel Prize winners (could be more!). Many there were seeking out this display.
After the museum we were back out into the scrum of Gamla Stan as we headed to dinner.
After dinner the sun in Stockholm finally sets at around 9:45p.
Tomorrow has a full agenda, see you then!

No pictures of food? Was it fast food in Stockholm night?
Meal summary at the end of the trip! Lots of great choices this trip
And cardamom buns! Oh. My. God.
You need to find anise icecream! Incredible. And the vast array of really authentic licorice. They make it with salt, so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I got completely addicted to it.
Licorice was rubbish and they should be ashamed! Buns delish, cinnamon too!
