We had long planned on a day trip to Dubai mainly because there is so much chatter about the place. But also be ause of the saying that was popular a few years ago: “It’s Shanghai, Mumbai, Dubai or goodbye”, which was referenced in terms of where the emerging business cities in the world were at that time.
Then the crash of 2008 happened and things changed. But Dubai is swinging back and there is an unimagineable level of construction going on right now. It’s definitely the place to be in the Middle East. Shopping, restaurants, sports, adventure, and general fun are all to be found.
We actually had less glittering goals on our day trip. Apart from our trip to the top of the Burj Khalifa, which is the world’s tallest at the moment, we really just wanted to see the famous Gold Souk, the Spice Souk (more markets!), ride the Metro for a certain friend of ours who lives in Paris, and then see Ski Dubai, the indoor ski run at the Mall of Emirates.
We started with the Burj Khalifa. It really is a beauty, very sleek. From a distance it looks like it’s from the future.
Straight up to the 124th floor, the elevator rose like a rocket and inside of 60 seconds we were walking around the outdoor viewing platform.
You also got a nice view of “The World”, a collection of man-made private islands that together look like a map of the world.
