What an incredible place this is. From the outside it is a construction zone as work began on La Sagrada Familia in 1882 and only reached the midpoint in 2010, although it is said to be aiming for completion in 2026.
I’ve always thought the outside looked like it was a sandcastle washed over by the first wave and getting closer didn’t really change that. Until you got really close and saw that the entire exterior is ornamented and each ornament is symbolic of something biblical or historical.
Even the doors are ornamented, at the “front” (or Nativity facade):
And the “back” (or Passion facade):
But it is inside where you become moved to tears at the beauty. Absolutely stunning.
The supports have been made to look like trees and so the effect of walkong inside is that it feels like you’re in a forest.
Everywhere you looked inside you found something amazing.
This was a very moving experience even for the non-religious. That one human being could envision and build an interior space like this is incredible.
Everyone should come here at least once. You should come to Barcelona, but you really should plan to spend some quality time at La Sagrada Familia. But buy tickets in advance, they only allow a limited number of people in at a time and your visit is timed, so they sell out!
