If it’s something we both love to visit when we travel it’s a good market. Mercat St. Josep la Boqueria in Barcelona is generally spoken of as one of the world’s best and we couldn’t wait to get to it during our visit. It’s the beating heart of Barcelona and easily accessible directly from La Rambla, the main walking street in central Barcelona.
As you enter you realize very quickly that this is a serious market. Every direction you look you see vendors selling the most beautiful and fresh produce, meats and seafood, cheeses, spices, and fruit.
Beautiful, beautiful fish and seafood.
This vendor sold every kind of egg imaginable including peahens and emus!
Of course delicious Iberian ham was everywhere to be found, both by the kilo
And by the handy walkabout cup
Gelato vendors and candy vendors, including one that sold dozens of kinds of nougat!
The entire market is ringed by small food counters that allow you to sit and enjoy a meal in the market. We were starved so we went right to a stall to have lunch. We arrived well before lunch but most of the food stalls were already hopping. We chose a place called Universal as it had a few open seats and we could get right in.
Under glass around the counter are all manner of seafood ready to select and have them cooked for you. You can also get eggs scrambled or fried over potatoes with either bacon or ham. Sounds unremarkable until you see that the eggs are fried in olive oil so that the edges are crispy and the yolk is creamy and delicious.
Fortified by lunch, we set forth on exploring La Boqueria and enjoyed every minute. Do not miss it if you come here.
But hurry – they are starting to clamp down on the thousands of tourists that visit La Boqueria every day by limiting the number allowed in!
