Lots is closed in Venice on Christmas day, and Boxing Day, as is the custom across Europe. But walking around is still possible, and so that’s what we did. We originally had planned on taking the vaporetto over to the island of Murano as it looked like the glass museum might be open. But when we went out to catch a bus, this is how it looked – standing room only!
They were jammed packed. Not all lines were running and so those that were left were filled with people trying to get to and fro. We were wedged onto the Linea 2 bus trying to get to Ferrovia in order to connect to the bus to Murano, but by the time we got to Ferrovia the connection would have been too hard and too long to get to Murano. So we abandoned ship and decided to just walk around. Venice is good for that.
We had no particular destination in mind, just taking in the beauty of Venice.
We did find a local church that was off the beaten path. In front of it was an empty square save for a cafe that was open and serving hot chocolate. So we sat for a bit.
After a fashion we were rewarded with this:
Sister is heading off to work, and looking pretty happy to be doing so too. After recovering we kept walking and ran into another church.
The bells were ringing. You can hear them by clicking on the link below.
Others were taking in a Christmas day walk as well, some wearing their classic Venetian capes (jealous!).
At the end of the day we hopped into a gondola and took the required Venetian gondola ride. So peaceful and provided wonderful views of Venice.
Here is a view of the world famous Rialto Bridge from our gondola.
The gondola ride is pretty touristy, and they gouge you heavily for the privilege, but you kind of have to do it if you’re in Venice.
