One of the challenges in returning home from vacation is that your real life comes crashing into your vacation life and then takes over. With this trip it was compounded by a head cold that cropped up during the last couple days of the trip when we were in bitter cold Paris. So apologies for the late post about our flight home on Lufthansa.
If you recall, we left off in the backseat of the Mercedes that was taking us to our aircraft. Hopefully you saw the video of that on the blog. So once our driver dropped us off airside at the bottom of the jetbridge, he guided us into an elevator that took us up to the aircraft door level.
I was excited because we were flying a rare Boeing 747-8i. It’s a new aircraft but there are fewer than 50 flying across the globe today. It also is the airframe that will be used as the Air Force One replacement.
Once up there we walked right into the aircraft.
Jeff really enjoyed this attention, he especially liked the driver helping him with his bags. I’m sure you can imagine the beatific look on his face at this moment. Hah.
Across the threshold we went, and then made our favorite aircraft boarding turn – LEFT.
As you can see the seats were large, spacious, and comfortable for our 9h30m flight home. Once we got settled in the flight attendant brought us a glass of champagne and a small bowl of macadamia nuts.
We were still 30 minutes or so from departure when the captain stopped by to introduce himself to us.
Then it was down to business with reviewing the menus for today.
This was a lunch flight, so nothing too over the top in terms of inflight service.
Followed by a snack before landing.
After a 90 minute deicing delay we took off and were served our cocktails and amuse bouches. I had a screwdriver for medicine purposes (warding off potential scurvy).
Jeff changed into his brand new Lufthansa pajamas. Lufthansa is his seventh airline from which he has scored his 30 or so pairs of pajamas.
We started with the caviar service. Mmm, a nice big dollop along with all the trimmings.
Then a selection of appetizers – I picked two, the mixed leaf lettuce with grilled vegetables and the tuna with caper and veal sauce.
Then the main course for which I selected the chicken roulade with carrots and braised potatoes.
Then a small selection of cheeses and a dessert to complete what was a very lovely lunch.
Before we knew it, 9h30m had passed and we were landing in Chicago. With Global Entry we were through customs in a matter of minutes and out at the curb climbing into our Uber to get home.
And just like that our trip was over!
The next post will highlight our favorite restaurants from this trip.
