This cathedral was built between 1329 and 1383 at the height of Catalonia’s maritime and mercantile preeminence, but a church has been on this site since 998 – over 1,000 years ago!
The basilica has the widest-spaced columns of any Gothic cathedral in Europe and has a claim to the slenderest stone columns. Does’t sound like much but it does give the interior a very spacious feel.
The ceilings of the cathedral are incredibly high.
A nice feature of the visit to Basilica Santa Maria is that you’re allowed to go up the ancient staircase to a higher floor and gain a view of the interior that you normally don’t get in a church.
