Melbourne has the world’s largest tram system with nearly 500 trams that carry about 500,000 people a day.
It’s really handy and completely automated aside from the driver. Tram stops let you know when the next tram is coming, and they run frequently all over the downtown area and then they spread out to most of the close-in suburbs.
So we got our reloadable tram cards (like a Ventra card in Chicago), and went to Queen Victoria Market on the north side of downtown Melbourne. Mostly produce and flea market stuff, but we did find a couple of baubles to take home.
Once through the market we made our way to the Royal Botanic Gardens. We’ll pick it up there in the next post because there are a number of pictures to share from that stop.
