Round two of our museum days. The major museums aren’t open every day so you have to carefully schedule when you attend. The Louvre is closed on Tuesdays, so we went Monday. Musee d’Orsay is closed on Mondays so we went today (Tuesday).
Musee d’Orsay is known for its collection of impressionist works from luminaries such as Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, Gaugain, and Degas. Some of the world’s most famous impressionist paintings hang in Musee d’Orsay including Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Gaugain’s Tahitian Women on the Beach, and Whistler’s famous portrait of his mother.
Unfortunately the museum has several famous pieces out on loan for exhibitions but there still was plenty to see including the stunning Green Lady by Picasso.
Other great paintings we saw included Monet’s Water Lillies (the location of which we will see on Wednesday in Giverny)…
The incredible Chrysanthemums by Monet (so real in appearance that the painting looks three dimensional!)…
…Degas’ The Ballet Class…
…and Monet’s The Magpie, who’s shadows in winter light are simply stunning
And then at the end of the impressionists galleries, a well deserved rest!
