Wow is the area around Kanazawa beautiful. At times it looks like the central California coast and then other times like New England. But right in the center of Kanazawa is a gem of a garden called Kenroku-en. They are recognized as one of three great gardens of Japan, were started in 1620 and took 200 years to develop. Can you imagine?
They are best known for the ropes that are attached to the most treasured trees (some are 400 years old and were grown from seed!) that form a conical pattern to protect them from the heavy snow that Kanazawa experiences in the winter. The garden is simply beautiful and we lingered in them for quite some time.
It’s off limits to step on, but the stepping stones make a goose-shaped formation called the “Flying Geese” bridge.
You can see here the ropes that are getting set up to protect the trees from the heavy snow. When they are unfurled they will form a rope canopy around the trees.
Seriously gorgeous.
