We continued our drive north from Jerez to the Andalusian city of Seville. Founded in the 8th century, it became the twin capital of the Almohad Empire along with Marrakech. Moroccan style and architecture are everywhere around Seville.
I think we sort of thought that Seville would not be as filled with tourists as we found Florence a few years ago at this time. Oh boy were we wrong, and we were utterly unprepared for that. Seville was packed to the rafters with tourists. Lines and crowds everywhere and that made us wistful for our time in Morocco!

So as a result we weren’t able to get into the Cathedral or the Alcazar, which are the two main tourists sites in Seville. But don’t worry, Seville has lots to do. It’s an ancient city with a long history which means a lot to look at.

The Plaza de España was built in 1929 as a celebration of the Ibero-American Exposition. It is built in a semi-circular shape that symbolically embraces Spain’s colonies in the Americas.

We also managed to hop into a carriage ride back to the center of Seville. After several days of 15,000+ steps a day our feet were rebelling!

Once back at the center, even though we couldn’t get in the Cathedral we could take some snaps from the outside.

A really beautiful structure but the heaving crowds were just too much.

In place of the Alcazar our hotel concierge suggested Casa de Pilatos which is considered to be the model of an Andalusian palace.

Built in the 16th century, the azulejos (colored tiles) on the interior were magnificent.

It was lovely and also quiet on this final day of the year.

Mostly we just walked the streets of Seville which are so charming. We ran into a sculpture called the Setas de Sevilla, also called the Metropol Parasol.

It is the worlds largest wooden structure and is so cool and they cover an entire square in the middle of Seville.
It’s highly interactive and you can even go up on tbe walkway that is above the structure. Definitely worth the time if you’re in Seville.
Tomorrow we head to Madrid late to catch our flight home to Chicago. Hard to believe it’s almost over!
