Located about 45 minutes from central Hiroshima, it is reached by train and then ferry. The island is most famous for the Great Torii Itsukushima. You may have seen it and not known where it is located as it appears in a lot of Japan tourism material.
The torii appears to be floating in the water and the drama was enhanced by a driving rainstorm.
The ferry over was short, but gave us the opportunity to see the oyster beds in the bay.
Once docked you flood out into the small touristy town with everyone tramping to the photo spot for the torii.
There’s also this view from a closer vantage point.
After eyeballing the torii we walked through the picturesque little town in the rain.
Ultimately we were driven to stay dry and so turned around and headed back to Hiroshima. Tomorrow we leave for Kyoto.
