On our last day in Taipei we made it to a couple more interesting sights. One in the far south end of Taipei and the other at the very north end.
First was the Maokong Gondola. It is a gondola that takes you from the Taipei Zoo up to the top of the mountains located just behind the Zoo.
From there you get magnificent views of Taipei and the surroundings. The ride to the top is about 25 minutes and you fly over some tea fields that are said to be among the best in Taiwan. We got to share it with three super fun Chinese grandmas out for the day!
From the we came back down and got back on the Metro for a 90 minute ride to the very north end of Taipei called Tamsui. It’s known for its fisherman’s wharf and also for the thronging Old Street.
The fisherman’s wharf wasn’t so interesting – looked a lot like San Diego!
So we immediately pivoted to the Old Street which was very colorful.
Lots of food stalls and shops selling all manner of things.
And of course it was packed with people celebrating the New Year.
We sampled a delicious moon cake filled with pineapple jam. So good that we gobbled it before taking a picture!
Here’s a tip from us to you: stay far away from the Stinky Tofu. You’ll thank us later.
We finished out our day at Tim Ho Wan, which is a branch of the well-known Hong Kong dim sum restaurant that we visited a couple of times when we’ve been in there. At one time it was the world’s least expensive restaurant to earn a Michelin Star. It’s good but no longer in the same league as Din Tai Fung!
Tomorrow we head to Japan and couldn’t be more thrilled to return there.

Looks absolutely great! I’d love to tag along on one of your trips. I think I’d earn my merit badge of being a good party member. The communist party that is. Then you could really call me a fellow traveler. XXOO
