Phillip Island is about two hours south of Melbourne on the coast and is best known for the Little Penguin “parade”. Little Penguins are the smallest of the 17 species of penguins in the world and they come ashore every night after feasting in the rich seas off the coast of southern Australia. As soon as the sun sets, out they come and they march up the beach to their burrows.
One thng that has changed since Sir Attenborough made this video clip is that pictures of any kind are now forbidden by law. The penguins have been blinded by camera flashes and so the government of Victoria (Melbourne’s state) has outlawed photography of the penguins. But not of the people!
Jeff is wearing all this gear around his neck (we both were) because we arranged for a semi-private tour with a park ranger and it came with binoculars, headphones (so we could hear the ranger), a lanyard identifying us, and a comfortable chair to sit on our private grandstand. Totally worth the extra money if you ever come here.
A bonus is watching the sunset over the ocean. Beautiful!
It was a lovely way to spend a sunset.
